Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s most dramatic attraction. Costa Rica is home to seven active volcanos, another 60 are dormant or extinct, making it one the most volcanically active areas in the world. The Arenal Volcano National Park offers beautiful hiking trails, smoothing hot springs, and the 5,389 feet tall volcano. Arenal emerged over 1000 years ago, pushing up like a giant molehill. There is no question that the pre-columbians Indians considered it to be sacred. On July 29, 1968 the slumbering giant awoken with a powerful earthquake, which made Arenal explode and decimated the nearby town of Tabacon. It has simmered ever since and for while barely a day went by without a minor eruption. Its spectacular at night when you can watch the lava explode as if was nature’s own firework show. Visitors should never assume of seeing an eruption because clouds can block the view, thus making the dry season the best time to watch. The past two years Arenal has been quiet and less active, however still a worthy place to experience.
