Domi Gromies is a junior development program for 5-12 year olds that encourages kids to get involved in surfing, ocean awareness, and surf safety.  The camp will consist of a series of surf lessons encompassing 6-8 hours and a variety of surf related games and safety techniques.  Our main aim is to educate the kids about all aspects of surfing and the ocean, in  a safe controlled environment, while building confidence, respect, and love for this amazing sport!

The camps will run in two separate categories

-The Micro Groms (5-8 years old)

-The Super Groms (9-12 years old)

Although both categories work towards the same skill levels and objectives.  A different learning approach can be taken for mini groms and super groms.  Considering maturity development skills and ability levels within the two categories we will also be assessing each surfer into their ability levels (e.g. Beginners, Advanced Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced.)

Included in the Domie Grommies Surf Camp will be an ocean awareness and beach safety program educating the kids in the following essential skills:

-Surf Conditions

-Surf Survival

-Basic First Aid

-Ocean Rescue skills

This insures every child understands and will be confident to surf safe and maybe even save a life should the situation arise.

Swimming Requirements

Your child must be water confident to join  Domi Gromies.  It is our expectation that your child can:

Float unassisted

Submerge without fear (open eyes under water and demonstrate breath control – blow bubbles underwater)

Free movement – move around confidently in an ocean environment independently and in a group situation

Initially, all water activities are conducted in shallow water (waist depth) only.  This allows those with a limited swimming ability to participate in the program, enabling them to develop their skills and confidence in the surf before moving up to the next skill level.

Surf Conditions – details the types of waves a Domi Gromie may encounter; how the wind and weather impacts surf conditions; how to recognise rips and other dangerous currents in the surf; understanding surfing etiquette; and how to protect the beach environment for future generations to enjoy.

Surf Survival & Ocean Rescue Skills – details the hazards Domi Gromies are likely to encounter and how to minimize and deal with these hazards safely and effectively.  Dealing with sun exposure; self rescue from the surf; identifying surfers and swimmers in difficulty and what to do; performing a basic board rescue; and understanding the different warnings and signals/flags used at the beach.

Basic First Aid – looks at the basic first aid procedures that every  Domi Gromie should be familiar in.  Basic CPR; managing marine stings and bites; understanding shock; and treatments for common surfing injuries.
