On the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, 9 miles of shoreline from Punta Uvita to Playa Pinuela is a protected park called Parque National Marino Ballena. The park has the largest coral reef in Central America Pacific coast and it’s named after the humpback whales that migrate certain times of the year to mate and give birth.
On low tide, a sand isthmus, over 700 meters long extend out into the Pacific forming the shape of a huge whale tail. In fact, this sand formation is one of the largest in the world and it just so happens to take the shape of a whale tail. Ironically the Whale Tail is located in an area known for a large breeding ground for humpback whales.
Being one of the exceptional attractions of the southern zone, Costa Rica surf camp offers surf lessons on the pristine beach of the park and also arranges boat tours to the island of Tres Hermanas and Isla Ballena.
Dolphins, turtles, pelicans, whales and other exotic species are commonly seen at the Marino Ballena National Park. This is truly a beautiful site to visit while in Costa Rica.
