The alarm buzzes at 4:00 am, it’s still dark outside and my heart started to pump in a different pace. The only noise I could hear outside my room was the noise of waves crashing on the rocks, the sound would rumble for almost a minute long, and yeah, we all knew what that means, surf is up!
The forecast was predicting huge waves and we were so ready for a surf trip. As typical surfers, checking the forecast becomes an addictive thing to do when you are on the Internet, think this way, it’s like not checking your facebook page when you are online, if you know what I mean.
When the waves achieve certain size, over 8ft for example, our local beach break has a tendency to closed out, specially on the low tide, therefore the time you ride the face of the waves minimize to seconds. When you are surfing, the longer you ride the face of the wave, the more fun it can be and the faster you can improve. The good news is that when the waves are big and hard to surf in Dominical, other spots that usually doesn’t work with small waves, especially point breaks, starts to go off.
We have many point breaks around our area, and I love surf these spots when it’s working. In the other hand, going to another break where you don’t call home, gives an extra excitement for the experience. Boards and luggage where packed in the car the night before, coffee was preset to brew and all we need to do is put some clothes and get in the car.
We arrived to the destination in about 3 hours drive. As we approached closer to the small surf village we watched beautiful glassy long waves breaking over and over again, big cheers of happiness broke out in the car.
The next days, all I can say is that when we weren’t in the water surfing, we were either eating or sleeping. It was long hours in the ocean catching big, powerful, unforgettable rides. I think every surfer in that town shared the same feeling, we had every muscle in our body sore and still we were all glowing from that feeling which only a surfer knows.
When you are on a surf trip with Costa Rica Surf Camp, it turns out that it doesn’t matter whether you are charging twelve-foot waves or cruising on a couple inches of white water, you will find that joy for surfing what we all embrace!
