Did you know? Coffee bushes are native to Ethiopia and were brought to Costa Rica from Jamaica in 1779, which turned out to be Costa Rica’s economic salvation. The rise of coffee in Central America started at the end slavery in the Caribbean, which affected Jamaica and other islands in the Caribbean.  Jamaica was the largest coffee producer at that time, suffered while Costa Rica’s coffee production boosted due to its perfect climate and rich volcanic soil to produce the highest quality coffee.

Ticos call coffee the “grain of gold”, in spanish “grano de oro” for a good reason. Coffee has been the economical backbone of Costa Rica, not only is one of Costa Rica’s most important crops but it’s also what keeps the economy strong. In the early 1800’s there was even a law that required every Tico household to grow coffee bushes by their houses. So by now, they know a thing or two about a good quality cup of coffee and enjoy drinking good quality coffee often.

Costa Rica coffee production has not been as high as it was before 1991 since bananas and tourism has been the focus when the price of coffee beans dropped.  Still there are over 95 coffee mills today in Costa Rica and over 80,000 producers grow coffee on over 270,000 acres.  Even though the quantity of coffee is less produced, the quality of the coffee is some of the highest in the world today.
